Intense summer sunlight can sometimes put a strain on the enjoyment of your outdoor living space. Not to mention that excessive sunlight can be harmful over time (always wear that sunscreen!). That’s why integrating shade into outdoor living spaces is popular. And there are a lot of ways to do this, many of which you might not think of.
Of course, one of the easiest and most common ways is to use an outdoor umbrella. They come in all sizes and colors, and they generally price-friendly affordable option.
Trees can also provide shade in an outdoor living space. If you’re building a new deck with a yard that already has a tree, consider designing it in such a way that the shade will hit your deck during the peak sun hours. Others that already have a deck can consider planting shade trees. However, if that’s something you’re considering, make sure that the root structure will not interfere with the deck piers.
Gazebos are another way to provide shade for your deck, but you’ll have to make sure that your deck has the structural capacity to hold it. It’s also a pricy, but attractive option. For additional shade and privacy, one can put screens on the outside of it.
Trellises are a great way to add some decoration to your deck as well as create some shade. They can hold a variety of climbing plants to create a more natural atmosphere. One very interesting way to use a trellis is to make the spaces extra-wide, and then put glass blocks in some of them. This creates a great light effect that changes throughout the day as sunlight hits the blocks at different angles. If you’re looking to create an even greater sense of privacy, trellises can be put along the entire outside (or just on one side) of the deck to create an enclosed atmosphere.
Arbors and pergolas can also help create shade for a hot summer day. They have the added benefit of creating a great focal point for these ideas, and pergolas can give the feel of an enclosed outdoor room. Some pergolas even have retractable covers so create even more shade. Climbing plants and trellises can also be integrated into the deck.
Hopefully this gives you a starting point on how to add some nice, cool shade to your outdoor living space!
