Gossen Corporation Announces Launch of Reàl Decking by Gossen

Milwaukee, WI, March 10, 2014 — Gossen Corporation announces today the launch of Reàl Decking by Gossen. Reàl Decking unites the authentic look of exotic hardwoods with the performance of Gossen cellular PVC. The new decking innovation launches with Brazilian Ipe—a multi-tonal dark brown with variation that looks nature-made.

"We are excited to introduce another innovative technology by Gossen—Real Decking," says Frank Butterfield, Director of Sales, Gossen Corporation. "Real offers the true look of exotic hardwood combined with the Gossen technology that architects, contractors, and dealers have grown to know and trust."

With the growing popularity of exotic hardwoods, such as Ipe, Gossen Corporation decided to harness its expertise in finishing to create a line of decking that would mimic the desired look of the hardwoods, but with enhanced performance features that can only be achieved through science. Reàl Decking does not require annual oil treatments or sealing to maintain its rich tones, and will not rot or decay over time.

Reàl Decking is offered in either solid planks or grooved for hidden fasteners, giving homeowners and contractors flexibility in design. Reàl is light weight and pre-drilling is unnecessary, making installation simpler than with Ipe.

Homeowners with an eye on sustainability will appreciate Reàl Decking. Manufactured responsibly in Milwaukee, WI, Reàl Decking saves valuable natural resources from further depletion.

Reàl Decking is a standard 5.5" x 1" profile in either solid planks or grooved for hidden fasteners. It will be available in Brazilian Ipe and sold in lengths of 12, 16 and 20 feet.

WeatherReady™ Trimboard comes in two grades; Standard and Premium, each at a price-point matched to your usage

Buyers, contractors, specifiers, and distributors strive to minimize their material and labor costs, yet still offer a low maintenance product. Gossen WeatherReady Trimboard now offers builders unique cost-cutting options they need to understand. It goes like this;

Will your new trimboard need painting for a color match? Get WeatherReady Standard at a very competitive price-point, with the warranty comparable to competitive PVC board manufacturers; or; Your new trimboard is to remain factory white with no need to paint? Get WeatherReady Premium.

WeatherReady Premium trimboard is warrantied against finish fading, darkening or yellowing* making it the economical choice when the finish color is to remain white without painting.

"The competition says 'needs no paint for protection' - Of course not. It's PVC. Too bad if you were hoping that new white color would last. It's not warrantied like our Premium Trimboard." says John Green, Gossen Director of Business Development. "Plus, the four sides of all our board is completely sealed via Gossen's CleanEdge technology. It's extruded to size, not rip-sawn, so it does not attract dirt, and keeps a good looking edge for years of trouble free performance." Premium or Standard, WeatherReady Trimboard can save you time and money.

WeatherReady Trimboard can be used for window and door trim, fascia, soffit, rake, frieze, deck and dock trim - anywhere a non-structural wood product can be used.

WeatherReady Trimboard Benefits
  • Available in two grades; Premium and Standard
  • Bright white color (Specify Premium when you want a warranted lasting color - or Standard when painting and want economy)

Glendale company's parts resist high temperatures

By Eric Decker of Small Business Times
Published Sept. 29, 2006, Small Business Times, Milwaukee, www.biztimes.com

Molding made by Glendale-based Gossen Corp. are commonly used in homes throughout the South because the PVC parts last longer than their wooden counterparts. Now, the company hopes to expand its market in the Midwest. Gossen's interior and exterior trim, balusters, hand rails, window parts and garage door accessories are particularly popular because of the high heat and humidity in the South. Those conditions make wooden components subject to rot and termite infestation.

Gossen's PVC parts carry higher prices tag than most wooden components, but they never need to be replaced for deterioration, said Bob Simon, executive vice president of Gossen.

"We sell the life cycle advantage for the builder or homeowner," he said. "Our product has a lifetime warranty. The best you can get from wood is 15 to 20 years."

Gossen's garage door components are used in about 40 percent of the garage doors sold in the United States. However, most homeowners won't recognize the Gossen name because the pieces are sold to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), who incorporate the pieces into garage door sets before they are sold.

The company has similar relationships with many of the largest regional and national window manufacturers, Simon said. Gossen makes almost all of the pieces needed for residential windows, other than the glass panes and spring-loaded sash belts. Window manufacturers that buy components from Gossen include Anderson, Lincoln Wood, Weather Shield and many others, Simon said.

Instead of purchasing formulas for its PVC compounds on the open market, Gossen buys raw products and uses an in-house chemist to create its own compounds, Simon said.

"That's given us big savings," he said. "On the open market, we'd be buying (compounds) for 80 to 85 cents per pound. By making our own, we're paying 62 to 65 cents per pound."About 65 percent of Gossen's costs are in raw materials, largely because PVC is made from petrochemicals, which are subject to market fluctuations. Although the company had to deal with recent record petroleum prices, its chemist was able to save the company about $1 million over the last year through formula changes.

"We're constantly looking at (our formula) to save money," Simon said.

Close scrutiny to its formula and a booming market in new home construction have given Gossen 12 percent average growth over the past five years, Simon said. Although new home construction is decreasing, the company is still predicting about 8 percent sales growth this year, he said.

To continue its sales increases, Gossen is working hard to expose homebuilders in the Midwest, Southwest and West to its products. Gossen is working now to establish better contacts with both builders and distributors in those regions, Simon said.

"Builders are looking for availability, which we don't have (in those parts of the country)," he said. "But they're also looking for durability, cost and life cycle advantage."

Gossen also is experimenting with new formulations, to create wood- plastic composite window, garage and trim pieces. Because the composite pieces have wood in them, they have a higher strength ratio and resist heat better than PVC pieces, Simon said.

PVC pieces are able to handle heat deflection temperatures of up to 157 degrees, but the wood-plastic composites can take heat deflections up to 200 degrees.

"In the desert areas, the wood composites will handle (the temperatures), but PVC will not," Simon said.

Gossen's chemist and engineers are now finalizing the company's formula for the wood-plastic composite chemical and its manufacturing process. The company will also need to create its own tooling to create the pieces — something it does for each of its manufacturing processes. "The secret is in tool design," Simon said. "The big commitment is going to be finding all of the products we want to make in (composites) and then doing the tooling. We could be looking at 2008."

Gossen is also now working with one of its OEM customers to develop a garage door that is completely made of PVC. The panels for the door are made of the plastic, and a urethane compound is injected into it, giving the door a high strength ratio. The doors will be marketed in Florida and other southeastern states that are prone to hurricanes.

The company is also developing interior doors made of PVC, which it will sell in southern states.

Gossen has two facilities, each with about 100,000 square feet of space, in the Milwaukee area. Its headquarters and manufacturing facility is located at 2030 W. Bender Rd. in Glendale, while its warehouse and distribution center is at 3701 W. Green Tree Rd. in Milwaukee.

The company has another manufacturing facility in Cartersville, Ga., where it also makes PVC parts.

Once Gossen begins finalizing its wood-plastic composite process and begins gaining a foothold in other markets, the company will have a better idea of where it needs to expand, Simon said.

"We'll know more towards the end of 2007," he said.

Gossen Corp. unveils exterior trim board

By Matt Griswold for Plastics News

Banking on consumers' growing appetite for low-maintenance products, Milwaukee-based cellular PVC extruder Gossen Corp. has launched a new exterior trim board.

The line, called Select Trimboard, can be made to various widths and thicknesses previously unavailable from Gossen, said Bob Simon, executive vice president.

Gossen's products compete with the likes of Azek Trimboards in Moosic, Pa., which also makes cellular PVC trim products, and Archbold, Ohio-based urethane millwork maker Fypon Ltd.

But Gossen's new line has a competitive advantage, Simon said.

"Most PVC boards on the market today are ripped from extruded PVC sheets," he said. "Our boards are extruded to size, so the sides of the board are sealed, not open from saw cuts."

Gossen operates extrusion facilities in Milwaukee and Cartersville, Ga. The new trim line is being produced in Milwaukee, but new lines will be added eventually in Cartersville, Simon said.

"This is a new process which required all-new downstream technology," he said. "We have dedicated three extrusion lines to this process and will add more lines in Georgia as the need for this product increases."

The new exterior trim line, according to a news release, is designed to maximize contact with masonry or galvanized metal.

Gossen employs about 320, the company said, and reported $47.6 million in extrusion sales last year.

Cellular PVC products meeting demands for low maintenance, high durability, energy efficiency

Builders, homeowners enjoy cellular PVC's lifecycle advantage
By Bob Simon

Homes with lower maintenance requirements and that meet increasingly stringent durability regulations are becoming the norm in the home-building and home-renovation world. Cellular PVC products are satisfying those demands, placing the cellular PVC industry in a more prominent position.

Cellular PVC has many advantages over wood and other polyvinyl chloride materials for both interior and exterior home use.

More often than not, cellular PVC competes as a building material with wood. For the purposes of energy, aesthetics and workability, cellular PVC compares favorably with wood.

For the homeowner, cellular PVC offers superior fuel efficiency, lower maintenance and pleasing aesthetics.

For the contractor, cellular PVC is as easy to work with as wood, requiring the same tools to cut, drill and nail. Cellular PVC comes in various colors but also can be painted. Designers enjoy the flexibility of a material that — unlike alternatives such as fiberglass — can be bent to accommodate curved windows and doorways.

For window and door manufacturers, cellular PVC products are more energy-efficient than rigid vinyl but not as expensive as clad windows.

In certain states, contractors are finding cellular PVC attractive for entirely different reasons. As states increase product callback requirements, contractors find peace-of-mind in using cellular PVC. Unlike wood, PVC will not rot or mold, making it a callback-free product for contractors.

Wood association reaches out to synthetic manufacturers

Gossen Mouldings will attend group's summer business meeting

MILWAUKEE — Gossen Corp. will attend the 43rd Summer Business Meeting of the Wood Moulding & Millwork Producers Association, a California-based trade group that until this time has solely admitted companies handling wood products.

Gossen, also known as Gossen Mouldings, is a Milwaukee-based manufacturer and distributor of cellular PVC mouldings for use in home building and renovating. Its products are used both in home interiors and on home exteriors.

The association recently decided to open its membership to include manufacturers of polystyrene, PVC, composite and other non-wood mouldings. "We recognize this distinct group is a growing part of the moulding and millwork industry," said Kellie Schroeder, executive vice president of the association. For now, the association is referring to the non-wood manufacturers as the Poly Blends group.

Bob Simon, executive vice president of Gossen Corp., will attend the meeting, set for July 26-28 in Albuquerque, N.M.

"We're pleased to see this national organization recognize the growing impact and importance of products such as ours in the building market," Simon said.

The Albuquerque meeting will include a session for the Poly Blends group to discuss market issues, select a permanent name for their sector, and formalize a Poly Blends committee for the association. Future meetings could cover other topics and include plant tours.

Gossen Mouldings sells its products to distributors and fabricators nationwide. Along with its Milwaukee headquarters and plant, it has a factory in Cartersville, Ga., north of Atlanta. It is on the web at gossenmouldings.com.

Gossen Corp. Introduces Select Trimboard Line

MILWAUKEE — Gossen Corp. has introduced a new, versatile line of stock board for exterior use, especially where weather resistance is important.

The Gossen Select PVC Trimboard can be used for fascia, soffit, rake, frieze, window and door trim — anywhere a non-structural wood product would be used.

Like other Gossen products, the Select Trimboard is highly durable and holds up against extreme weather conditions, providing homeowners with trouble-free performance for many years. Select Trimboard exceeds the 308-04 cellular PVC standard of the American Architectural Manufacturers Association.

Gossen uses its unique smooth-edge technology on all four sides of the Select Trimboard, with one side the trimboard having a totally smooth surface and the opposite side having a smoothened wood-texture appearance. The four finished sides provide smooth exposed edges with no absorption. While most PVC boards on the market today at ripped from extruded PVC sheets, Gossen's are extruded to size so the sides of the boards are sealed, not open from saw cuts.

The Select product was developed to maximize contact with masonry or galvanized metal.

The Select line differs from Gossen's other trimboard lines in its wide range of size availability. Gossen Select Trimboard is available in construction lumber dimensions in the most demanded sizes, with thicknesses up to 5/4-inch and widths up to eight inches.

Gossen's cellular PVC products can be used with standard woodworking tools. Unlike wood, the Select Trimboard has more workable application to curved surfaces.

The Gossen Select products are currently being made at the company's Milwaukee plant with new technology. The company dedicated three extrusion lines, and will add lines at its Cartersville, Ga. plant as demand grows.

Gossen Select Trimboard holds a 20-year limited warranty.

More information on Gossen's Select PVC Trimboard is available by calling 800-558-8984, or by e-mailing customerservice@gossencorp.com. More information on the company is available at www.gossencorp.com.

Gossen's hurricane-withstanding window is a world-wide first

MILWAUKEE — Gossen Corp. has launched a new cellular PVC window product certified for use in hurricane-prone areas.

The No Draft Window has achieved a certified unit design pressure rating of 50. The rating means that under rigorous laboratory conditions, the window system was able to resist wind penetrations at pressures of 75 pounds per square foot and resist eight inches of water per hour. That is the equivalent of hurricane conditions — including winds in excess of 170 mph.

The DP 50 rating was achieved without the use of a steel reinforcing bar — a method commonly used by rigid vinyl window manufacturers. The DP rating in the Gossen product could be increased with the addition of steel reinforcement in an existing channel.

Gossen's window is made of cellular PVC, giving it insulation values superior to wood. Gossen's cellular PVC products, however, can be sawed, painted and drilled through as easily as wood and with the same tools.

As a cellular PVC product, the No Draft Window's vinyl is solid, in contrast to other non-cellular PVC window systems that are filled with reground PVC.

"This product is appropriate not only for hurricane-prone regions but also for anytime a contractor wants a window with a superior EnergyStar rating," said Bob Simon, Gossen's executive vice president. "Even our low-end window achieves DP ratings higher than those of our competition. We are proud to occupy this premium position in the market. As we continue to grow our network of fabricators, our fabricator partners are discovering the benefits of selling a product that not only drives more revenues but results in happier customers and no call-backs."

Fabricators and contractors interested in more information on the No Draft Window and other Gossen cellular PVC products can visit the Gossen web site at http://www.gossenmouldings.com/ or call the company at 800-558-8984.

Gossen introduces rot-free door frame moulding

MILWAUKEE — Gossen Corp. has launched a rot-free cellular PVC entry doorframe moulding product, focusing on markets where moisture-related rot and mold are problems with traditional door frames.

The frame, which has a wood-like appearance, achieves higher insulation values than wood.

The cellular PVC product can easily be milled post-factory. Its single-material construction also means it can be heated and curved to conform to arched doorways. Competing PVC products are filled with reground PVC or a wood mixture, which limits their ability to bend.

Gossen's frame is currently available in 4-9/16" but soon will be offered in the 6-9/16" dimension common in extreme northern climates.

"Right now we are offering the frame in 986 white with a smooth finish," said Bob Simon, Gossen's executive vice president. "We also can texture the product to look like wood, and fabricate to your specifications."

Simon said regulatory pressures in some states will result in strong interest in a door frame that will not rot or mold, and that meets the structural requirements for coastal areas.

"As a component exposed to the contrasting temperatures inside and outside a home, moisture will naturally condense on a door moulding," Simon said. "As contractors are legally responsible for building defects longer and longer after building completion, it's natural that they would want to eliminate rot problems by switching from wood to cellular PVC."

Fabricators and contractors interested in more information on rot-free door frame moulding and other Gossen cellular PVC products can visit the Gossen web site at http://www.gossenmouldings.com/ or call the company at 800-558-8984.
